Newton Park, Port Elizabeth


Newton Park is a suburb of Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. It situated 5 km north-west of the Port Elizabeth Central Business District.

History

During 1907, the suburbs of Fairview and Newton Park were laid out. Because George Newton had the vision to establish a company, the first portion of the land was named after him, "Newton Park".

Geography

Newton Park is surrounded by the suburbs of Cotswold, Fernglen, Glenhurd, Greenacres and Schauderville.
It is located along Cape Road which connects to the Port Elizabeth city centre and Humansdorp. The road also connects to the off-ramp of the N2 highway which further connects to Cape Town, Humansdorp, Makhanda and East London.

Schools

Schools in Newton Park include Herbert Hurd Primary School and Laerskool Newton Park Primary School.

Commerce and Industry

Numerous stores and restaurants are located along its main road, Cape Road, with notable ones being pharmacies, the post office, Nando's, Builder's Express, PG Glass, Absa, Midas, Spar, Dis-Chem and Goldwagen amongst others. Newton Park is actually much of a residential suburb and most of its industries along concentrated around Cape Road, the rest of the suburb is mostly residential.
Newton Park is also adjacent to one of Port Elizabeth's largest shopping centre, Greenacres Shopping Centre located in the suburb of Greenacres.

Sport

There is a swimming pool in the northern edge of Newton Park.

Medical

Although Newton Park has no hospital, Netcare Greenacres in the adjacent suburb of Greenacres is the nearest hospital being less than a kilometre from Newton Park.

Baakens Valley

The Baakens Valley through which the Baakens River flows in lies south of Newton Park and includes local wildlife and indigenous bush. The shorter 7,5km Lower Trail starts at the Third Avenue Dip in Newton Park, leading down river to Settlers Park and Brickmakers Kloof.
