Mount Koubru


Mount Koubru is one of the highest mountains in Manipur, India and the abode of God Lainingthou Koubru and other Meitei Manipuri deities in Manipuri mythology. Sapormeina town lies below the peak. It is located in the Kangpokpi district of Manipur and is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Manipur.
The mountain is noted for mountain hiking as well as mountain climbing.

Mythological connection

Mount Koubru serves as an abode of God Lainingthou Koubru and other Meitei Manipuri deities since ancient times in Manipuri mythology, Meitei literature and Meitei culture. The mount Koubru is a main dwelling place of Lord Lainingthou Koubru, the protector deity of the Northern Kanglei world. The God Lainingthou Koubru lives with his consort Goddess Kounu and their vehicle animal Shamu Laishaa Angouba, the White Elephant.

Culture

Since ancient times, Mount Koubru has served as the main pilgrimage site in Manipur and the Kanglei world. The Meitei people and the followers of Sanamahi faith climb the mountain once in their lifetime.
