Lucerne Symphony Orchestra


The Lucerne Symphony Orchestra is a Swiss orchestra based in Lucerne. Its primary concert venue is the Lucerne Culture and Congress Centre.
The precursor ensemble to the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1806, and had the name Allgemeinen Musikgesellschaft Luzern. The orchestra has commissioned new compositions from such composers as David Philip Hefti and Wolfgang Rihm.
Since 2011, the orchestra's chief conductor is James Gaffigan. Gaffigan has recorded commercially with the orchestra for Harmonia Mundi. Gaffigan is scheduled to conclude his chief conductorship of the orchestra at the close of the 2020-2021 season.
In 2010, Michael Sanderling first guest-conducted the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra. In November 2019, the orchestra announced the appointment of Sanderling as its next chief conductor, effective with the 2021-2022 season.
