Her seventh studio album, it was also her fourth to receive an RIAA gold certification, although none of its singles were Top Ten country hits. The title track was its lead-off single, peaking at #11 on Hot Country Songs, followed by the Top 20 "Standing Knee Deep in a River ", then "Seeds" and "Listen to the Radio", which also failed to make Top 40.

Critical reception

Occasional Hope reviews this album for MyKindofCountry.com and writes "Lonesome Standard Time saw Kathy working with a new producer, Brent Maher, probably best known for his work with The Judds in the 80s. Happily, this didn’t change the overall style, and Kathy was able to maintain her usual standard of high-quality material with a strongly non-mainstream feel."
Brian Mansfield of AllMusic gives the album four and one half stars and says "Lonesome Standard Time isn't as ambitious as Time Passes By, but it's filled with lovely performances from Mattea's favorite sources: bluegrass, gospel-influenced country and Nanci Griffith."
