The House of Magnates was initially established during the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, as the upper chamber of the Diet of Hungary, and existed with interruptions 1848-1918.

During the First Hungarian Republic the House of Magnates was replaced by the National Council. During the Hungarian Soviet Republic it was replaced by the National Assembly of Soviets. 1920-1927 it was replaced by a unicameral National Assembly. 1927-1945 it was re-established.
