Governor-General of Mauritius

The Governor-General of Mauritius was the acting head of state of Mauritius from 12 March 1968 when the country gained independence from the United Kingdom. Queen Elizabeth II was given the title Queen of Mauritius until 12 March 1992 when Mauritius became a republic. The Governor-General was appointed for an indefinite term, serving at the pleasure of the monarch.
According to the Statute of Westminster 1931, the Governor-General was appointed solely on the advice of the Cabinet of Mauritius without the involvement of the British government. In the event of a vacancy, the Chief Justice served as Officer Administering the Government. Both British and Mauritian citizens held the post.
