Clontarf was platted in 1876, and named after Clontarf in Ireland, the native land of many of its early settlers. A post office has been in operation at Clontarf since 1876.

The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 2.96. The median age in the city was 42.5 years. 23.2% of residents were under the age of 18; 10.9% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 19.5% were from 25 to 44; 34.1% were from 45 to 64; and 12.2% were 65 years of age or older. There were 62 households, out of which 41.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.1% were married couples living together, 3.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.8% were non-families. 21.0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.76 and the average family size was 3.20. In the city, the population was spread out, with 33.5% under the age of 18, 4.6% from 18 to 24, 31.2% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 113.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.3 males.
